Moltbot Security: The Hidden Risks of Your New Favorite AI Agent

You have probably seen the headlines. The open source world is buzzing about a new tool that promises to change how we work. It was called Clawddbot until a few days ago, but after a trademark nudge from Anthropic, it is now Moltbot. 

The rebrand fits. Lobsters molt to grow, and this tool is growing fast. It is not just another chatbot. It is a “local first” autonomous agent that lives on your machine. It can book flights, manage your calendar, refactor code, and organize your files. It does all of this by accessing your local system directly. 

That sounds incredible for productivity. It is also terrifying for endpoint security. 

We need to have a serious conversation about what happens when you give an AI agent “God mode” permissions on your laptop. The convenience is undeniable, but the Moltbot security model currently relies heavily on trust and very little on guardrails. If you are running this in a corporate environment or even on your personal device, you need to understand the risks before you type that first command. 

The Endpoint Security Nightmare

Most AI tools live in the browser. When you use ChatGPT or Claude, the code runs on their servers. The worst that usually happens is they hallucinate a fact. Moltbot is different. It runs locally. It effectively turns your MacBook or Windows PC into a server. 

To do its job, Moltbot needs access. It needs to read your files to organize them. It needs to run terminal commands to install packages or move data. It needs internet access to check your email or browse the web. 

From an endpoint security perspective, this is a perfect storm. You are voluntarily installing a tool that has read and write access to your entire file system. If you configure it incorrectly, and many users do, you are leaving the front door wide open. 

Recent reports have found hundreds of Moltbot instances exposed to the public internet. Because the tool is designed to accept commands, an exposed instance is essentially a remote command execution vulnerability waiting to happen. An attacker who finds your exposed port can ask Moltbot to “upload the contents of the Documents folder to my server” or “delete the operating system.” The agent will happily oblige because it thinks you are the one asking. 

This is not a theoretical exploit. It is a feature of the software. It is designed to obey. If you do not lock down the network settings with a VPN or strict firewall rules, your endpoint is compromised the moment you switch the bot on. 

Data Security and the Plaintext Problem

Let’s talk about memory. One of the best features of this agent is that it remembers you. It recalls your preferences, your project details, and your conversation history. 

But where does that memory go? 

Right now, Moltbot stores its configuration and memory files in plain text on your hard drive. This is a massive data security oversight. If you have handed the bot your API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, or your email credentials, those secrets are often sitting in a simple text file or a JSON config that is readable by anyone with access to your machine. 

This makes your computer a massive honeypot for “infostealer” malware. In the past, hackers had to hunt for specific browser cookies or password vaults. Now, they just need to grab the Moltbot configuration folder. It is a one stop shop for your digital identity. 

If you are using this for work, the implications are even messier. You might be feeding proprietary company code or customer data into a local agent that has no encryption at rest. If your laptop gets stolen, or if you accidentally download a malicious file that scans your drive, that data is gone. The data security protocols we have spent a decade building,encryption, least privilege, zero trust, are effectively bypassed by this one tool. 

The Supply Chain Risk

The problem gets deeper when we look at how Moltbot expands its capabilities. It uses “Skills” (formerly Plugins). These are scripts or instructions you can download to teach the bot new tricks. 

The community has already built hundreds of these skills. While open-source collaboration is great, it introduces a significant supply chain risk. There is no centralized vetting process for every skill floating around on GitHub or Discord. 

If you download a “PDF Summarizer” skill from an unverified source, you might be installing a script that summarizes your PDFs and quietly emails them to a third party. Because you have already granted the main agent permission to use the internet and access files, the malicious skill inherits those permissions. It does not need to ask for a password. It just acts. 

We have also seen fake Visual Studio Code extensions masquerading as official Moltbot tools. These extensions deliver malware directly to your IDE. It is a classic social engineering tactic, but it works because people are excited and moving fast. They want the magic tool, and they click “Install” without checking the publisher. 

Local AI Risks in the Enterprise

Security teams are already losing sleep over “Shadow AI”; employees pasting sensitive data into public chatbots. Moltbot introduces “Shadow Infrastructure.” 

Developers love this tool because it automates the boring stuff. They might install it on a production server to help with log analysis or run it on a company laptop to speed up coding. Suddenly, you have an unmonitored agent with root level capabilities running inside your corporate network. 

It bypasses traditional DLP (Data Loss Prevention) tools because the activity looks like legitimate user behavior. The bot is acting as the user. If the bot decides to zip up a project folder and upload it to a cloud drive because it “thought” that was part of the backup workflow, your security software might not flag it. 

How to Use It Safely

Does this mean you should never use Moltbot? Not necessarily. The technology is genuinely impressive. But you have to treat it like a loaded weapon. You cannot just leave it on the kitchen table. 

If you are going to run local AI risks like this, you need to sandbox it. 

  1. Use Docker: Never run the agent directly on your bare metal OS (your main Windows or macOS environment). Run it inside a Docker container. This limits the damage it can do if it goes rogue or gets hijacked. It can only mess up the files inside the container. 
  1. Network Isolation: Do not expose the control port to the internet. If you need to access it remotely, use a VPN or an SSH tunnel. Never open the port on your router. 
  1. Limit Permissions: The bot will ask for API keys. Give it “scoped” keys with limited budgets and permissions. Do not give it your main admin key that has unlimited spending power. 
  1. Watch Your Wallet: There are horror stories of the agent getting stuck in a loop—trying to fix a bug, failing, and trying again—while burning through hundreds of dollars in API credits overnight. Set hard limits on your API usage. 

The Future is Autonomous but Dangerous

We are entering a new phase of AI. We are moving from chatbots that talk to agents that act. Moltbot is the first viral example of this shift, but it won’t be the last. 

The potential for data security breaches and endpoint security failures will only grow as these agents get smarter and more integrated into our OS. We need to stop treating them like toys and start treating them like employees. You wouldn’t give a new intern the keys to the server room and your credit card on their first day. You shouldn’t do it for an AI agent either. 

Keep experimenting, but keep your guard up. The lobster might be friendly, but it has claws.
